For years, data centers were perceived as technical infrastructure, essential yet largely invisible in public debate. Today, however, their role has evolved significantly: they are now a strategic pillar of the digital economy, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the services that drive the country’s digital transformation.
In an article published by Agenda Digitale, Laura Castagna, Vice President of IDA – Italian Data Center Association, examines the contribution data centers can make to Italy’s industrial future, highlighting their value not only from a technological perspective but also from an economic and social standpoint.
According to the analysis, these infrastructures can attract investment, enhance business competitiveness, foster the development of highly skilled professionals, and contribute to urban regeneration. At the same time, they play a critical role in supporting the growing demand for digital capacity driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud services.
For IDA, recognizing the strategic value of data centers means promoting a long-term vision in which digital infrastructure is considered a fundamental asset for the country’s economic growth, innovation, and sustainability.
