Data Centers: Infrastructure for the Energy and Digital Transition

The growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services is making data centers increasingly critical to the country’s economic and technological development. In this context, their role extends far beyond data processing, positioning them as strategic assets for the energy transition as well.

In a new contribution published by WEC ITALIA Dialogues, Luca Beltramino, President of IDA – Italian Datacenter Association, explores the key conditions required to support the sustainable growth of the sector, highlighting the importance of innovation, energy efficiency, and infrastructure development.

The interview outlines the significant progress the industry has made in improving energy efficiency through advanced cooling systems, AI-driven energy optimization, and the deployment of increasingly efficient technologies. At the same time, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, and heat recovery solutions are playing an increasingly important role in the evolution of data center infrastructure.

According to Beltramino, turning these innovations into a competitive advantage for Italy will require investments in energy and digital infrastructure, applied research, and the development of the skills needed by a rapidly evolving industry. Strengthening collaboration between companies, universities, research centers, and institutions will also be essential to building an ecosystem capable of supporting the sector’s continued growth.

“Data centers should not be viewed solely as large energy consumers, but as infrastructures capable of actively contributing to the evolution of the power system.”

As Luca Beltramino points out, through the integration of renewable energy sources, energy storage solutions, and increasingly digitalized energy management, data centers can help enable smarter, more flexible, and more resilient power grids.

From this perspective, data centers are emerging as enabling infrastructures for the digitalization of the economy, the development of artificial intelligence, and the modernization of the national energy system, contributing to the country’s competitiveness and resilience.
