Stop Data Center Speculation

Luca Beltramino, President of IDA – Italian Datacenter Association, was interviewed by Milano Finanza on the development of the Italian data center market and the need to ensure a more efficient approach to accessing the electricity grid.

During the interview, Beltramino highlighted how the current grid connection request process may encourage speculative applications that are not backed by actual industrial projects, potentially slowing down investments from operators that are ready to develop digital infrastructure in Italy.

For this reason, IDA advocates for stricter requirements for grid connection applications, including the submission of preliminary project documentation and financial guarantees proportional to the requested power capacity. The goal is to support serious investors and accelerate the deployment of the infrastructure needed for the country’s digital growth.

Beltramino also emphasized the importance of overcoming common misconceptions surrounding data centers, noting that modern facilities are increasingly energy efficient and represent a strategic asset for Italy’s competitiveness and digital transformation.

According to the estimates shared in the interview, the Italian market is expected to continue growing in the coming years, supported by announced investments and rising demand for digital infrastructure. To fully seize this opportunity, it will be essential to combine growth with clear regulations, investments in the power grid, and ongoing dialogue with local communities.
