Energy Decree: a positive signal for the development of data centers in Italy

The ICIS article focusing on the strategic role of data centers in Italy and on the measures set out in the draft Energy Decree Law, currently under discussion at the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), is now online.

In this context, IDA – Italian Datacenter Association has expressed its support for the decree, highlighting the importance of a single environmental permitting procedure with clear and defined timelines, as emphasized by Floriano Monteduro, Chair of IDA’s Energy Technical Committee. The goal is to ensure a more streamlined authorization process, with a maximum duration of 10 months, in order to encourage investment and accelerate the development of the sector.

Clear rules for a strategic sector

In the data center industry—key infrastructure for the country’s digital transformation—it is essential that rules are clear, consistent and accessible to all operators, regardless of size. IDA represents a diverse ecosystem, largely made up of small and medium-sized enterprises that invest and innovate within Italy.

The association’s mission is precisely to overcome the regulatory fragmentation that has slowed the growth of the sector. In this sense, IDA supports the need for a national law that simplifies authorization procedures and protects the entire industry.

A shared path with institutions

This vision has also been embraced by Parliament, thanks to the commitment of MP Giulia Pastorella, who over a year ago introduced the first national framework bill dedicated to data centers. The initiative brought together all political forces, with contributions from MPs Enzo Amich, Giulio Centemero, Anna Ascani and Antonino Iaria, and led to the adoption of a unified text currently under review by the Chamber of Deputies.

IDA reaffirms its willingness to work alongside institutions to build a fair, competitive and sustainable market capable of enhancing Italian excellence and attracting new investments.
