On the occasion of Data Center Nation Milan, Luca Beltramino, President of IDA – Italian Datacenter Association, was interviewed by TGR Lombardia to discuss the role and growth prospects of the data center sector in Italy.
During the segment, Beltramino highlighted how the industry is still at an early stage of development in the country, but with significant growth potential. According to IDA data, there are currently around sixty data centers in Lombardy—a relatively small number compared to the region’s economic and demographic weight, but one that is expected to increase in the coming years.
He also emphasized how Italy is increasingly seen as a strategic destination for international operators, thanks to competitive factors such as high-quality energy infrastructure and advanced connectivity, among the best in Europe.
A key point of the interview focused on regulation. Beltramino positively commented on the introduction by the Lombardy Region of a dedicated law for data centers—the first in Italy—which represents an important step toward greater clarity and consistency in authorization processes and in managing impacts on the territory.
At the same time, he stressed the need to support the sector’s growth with shared and transparent rules, capable of addressing public concerns, particularly regarding energy consumption, resource use, and environmental impact.
The participation in Data Center Nation and the visibility generated by the TGR coverage confirm the increasing attention toward the sector and reinforce IDA’s role as a key reference point in the dialogue between industry, institutions, and local communities.
