Luca Beltramino guest on Caffè Affari Class CNBC

Luca Beltramino, President of the Italian Datacenter Association (IDA), appeared on Caffè Affari on Class CNBC to provide an overview of the data center sector in Italy, discussing opportunities, challenges, and future growth prospects.

During the interview, Beltramino outlined the current state of a rapidly expanding industry, stressing that the main priorities today are strengthening infrastructure—particularly energy and network capacity—and establishing a clear, competitive regulatory framework. “The sector is growing, but this development must be supported by clear rules and efficient permitting processes,” he noted.

Significant attention was given to Italy’s role within the European landscape. According to Beltramino, the country has a tangible opportunity to position itself as a strategic hub for data centers in Southern Europe, thanks to its geographic location and rising digital demand. However, a significant dependence on foreign infrastructure remains, bringing the issue of both national and European digital sovereignty to the forefront.

Another key topic was the relationship between data center expansion and the energy system. Beltramino pointed out that the sector’s competitiveness is closely tied to energy costs and the availability of robust network infrastructure. “The question is whether Italy is ready to support this growth: targeted investments are needed to ensure stability, capacity, and sustainability,” he said.

The discussion also addressed potential risks linked to the geographic concentration of investments, particularly in the Milan area, which is currently one of the most active hubs for new data center developments. Such concentration can place pressure on the electricity grid and local infrastructure, making a coordinated and strategic planning approach essential.

In this context, the requests to institutions are clear: faster permitting processes, regulatory clarity, competitive access to energy, and infrastructure development. “Only in this way,” Beltramino concluded, “can Italy fully seize the opportunities of a fast-growing market and strengthen its role in the European landscape.
