Data centers and skills: the work that underpins the digital infrastructure

The growth of the data center market in Italy is generating an increasingly broad and complex demand for professional skills. This is highlighted in a recent article published by Il Sole 24 Ore, which shows how the development of these infrastructures is not only a technological matter, but also an important driver of qualified employment.

Behind every new data center lies a complex supply chain involving numerous professional roles, well beyond the IT domain. From site selection and permitting, through civil and plant engineering design, to operational management and digital services, data centers require cross-disciplinary skills and the ability to coordinate across areas such as energy, connectivity, security, and land use.

In this context, so-called hybrid profiles are becoming increasingly central—professionals capable of connecting service requirements, technological choices, and industrial strategy. “We need people who can translate a service need into a technological solution,” emphasizes Carlotta Matteja, Chair of IDA’s Education and Talent Working Group. This capability makes the presence of a single point of contact essential—someone able to manage the complexity of projects involving multiple stakeholders and areas of expertise.

The development of data centers therefore represents a major employment opportunity, affecting both the entry of new professional profiles and the evolution of existing skills in the labor market. In this scenario, training and continuous upskilling become strategic levers to support the sector’s growth and strengthen the country’s overall competitiveness.

IDA is committed to promoting greater awareness of the value of human capital in the data center sector and to fostering dialogue among industry, academia, and institutions, ensuring that the development of digital infrastructures goes hand in hand with the growth of skills and job opportunities.
